Welcome to the Clinical Psychology Internship Website of the University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Psychiatry. Thanks for your interest in our program.
Our APA-accredited* program is also a member of the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science and the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). Our program subscribes to a clinical science model that integrates research and clinical practice. The internship is designed to provide trainees with opportunities to be engaged actively in the integration of clinical research and practice. We adhere to the principle that psychological practice is based on the science of psychology, which, in turn, is influenced by the professional practice of psychology. As you'll see, we offer an extensive range of clinical and clinical research experiences, and we encourage you to review them all, with the idea of breadth and depth of training in mind.
For many years, the UIC Department of Psychiatry operated separate psychology internships in child and adult areas, each accredited by the American Psychological Association. Currently the two programs are combined under one training model, although separate tracks are maintained in child and adult areas. Each track offers areas of "concentration" from which applicants can craft an individualized curriculum that fits their training needs and career goals. Although interns apply to and enter the program through only one of the tracks, their curriculum could include experiences across both tracks, allowing for experiences across the lifespan. Interns can obtain experience in UIC outpatient clinics, schools, community agencies, and in the UIC hospital.
The main goals of the program include:
- Intensive training in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental disorders within a clinical-research model, in which clinical practice and research are integrated.
- Training culturally sensitive psychologists by providing broad clinical experience across a variety of settings and populations with specific attention to issues related to individual differences and cultural diversity.
- Preparing interns for practice in a variety of academic, mental health, and medical settings, in the public or private sector.
Our interns have the unique opportunity to craft their own individual internship experience by selecting a combination of rotations that support their personal career trajectories. We hope you find answers to all of your questions. We look forward to receiving your application.
